Applications for Citizenship by Descent - Instructions and Checklist
All residents of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay must lodge their application for Australian citizenship by descent at the DIAC office at the Australian Embassy in Brasilia.
The following is a list of requirements to be included with your or your child's application for Australian citizenship by descent. We recommend that you submit all required documents in the first instance to ensure timely processing of the application.
All official documents and identity documents must be certified copies, however, in some circumstances we may request you provide your original documents. (Certified copies will be retained by this office).
Any material submitted in a language other than English must be accompanied with an English translation from an official translator.
The application may be lodged in person or by mail.
We will return the original official documents you supply once we finalise the application, unless you request to have your originals sent back to you prior to decision (see below).

Application Charge
The charges can be paid at any overseas DIAC office including the Australian Embassy in Buenos Aires or at a DIAC office in Australia. The original pink receipt must accompany the application.

Evidence applicant is a natural (not adopted**) child of an Australian Citizen: Certified copy of applicant's birth certificate.
Evidence that at least one parent was an Australian citizen at the applicant’s birth or became an Australian citizen on 26 January 1949:
Certified copy of parent's birth certificate; or
Certified copy of certificate of Australian citizenship; AND
Evidence that the Australian parent has not taken out another nationality prior to 4 April 2002. Examples of documents that may be submitted to substantiate your claim include evidence of citizenship held from another country which shows the date that citizenship was acquired.
Evidence of change of name (if applicable)
Evidence of character : If the applicant is over 18 years of age*, the applicant must provide penal clearances for their home country and all places of residence outside their home country where they have resided for more than 12 months (cumulatively) in the past 10 years.

Additional supporting documents may be requested in certain cases.
*Applicants who will turn 18 during the application process will be required to provide the relevant police clearances described above.
** Adopted children are not eligible for registration of citizenship by descent. Please refer to our child visa options.
Return arrangements for the safe return of your original documents.
Brazilian Residents
Please advise if you would like your original documents returned to you within days of receipt of your application. If this is the case, you must include 2 (two) self-addressed prepaid envelopes; one for the immediate return of your original documents and one for the certificate of citizenship once/if the application for citizenship is approved - this envelope must be 23 by 25 centimetres to accommodate the document.
Residents of Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay
All original documents submitted with the application will be returned to our Embassy in Buenos Aires via courier once the application is finalised. The Embassy in Buenos Aires will then contact applicants directly to collect the documents.
